Maoists Have Threatened Death Penalty For Participations

Malkangiri: Despite the diktat issued by the Maoists through their posters threatening death penalty for participations in the ensuing three-tier Panchayat polls, the process for filing of nominations kickstarted in the Maoist-infested southern Odisha district here on Wednesday.
Official sources informed that on day one filing of nominations for Ward Member, Sarpanch, Samiti Member have been reported from various blocks on the day, but no nomination for the 15 Zilla Parishad zones was reported.
Accordingly, in Mathili block nominations for two Ward Member posts, five Sarpanch posts and three for Samiti Member posts. In Khairput block one Ward Member and one Sarpanch candidates filed nominations while there was no filing for Samiti Member post. In Korkunda block only one candidate for Ward Member post filed nomination. In Chitrakunda block on the day one there was no filing of nominations. In Malkangiri block 12 candidates filed nominations for Ward Member posts, six for Sarpanch while no one filed for Samiti Member post. In Padia block five filed nominations for Ward Member post, one for Sarpanch while no one filed on the day for Samiti Member post. In Kalimela block nine candidates filed nominations for Ward Member post, two for Sarpanch and two for the Samiti Member post. Notably, Malkangiri district has 111 Gram Panchayats (GPs) and seven blocks.
Malkangiri Sub-Collector informed, “As per the schedule, from January 11 to 17 and from 11 am to 3 pm on the days the nomination papers will be issued and the candidates can also file on the same day abiding by the norms. We do not have any effect of the said Maoist threats.”
As per the notification issued by the State Election Commission (SEC), the process for filing of nomination papers by candidates of different political parties contesting the ensuing Panchayat Polls started from today (January 11).
Nomination filing will be from 11 am to 3 pm till January to 17 while scrutiny of the papers will be done on January 18, withdrawal of nomination is allowed till 3 pm on January 21 and the final list of candidate names will be out after that, as slated by the SEC.
Notably on Tuesday (January 10), posters pasted allegedly by the red ultras have issued such a fatwa and the posters were discovered flooding the remote pockets of the district.
In the posters they have desisted desirous candidates from contesting and voters to cast votes in the grassroots-level elections or would face dire consequences for breaching their deadly decree after being tried in the ‘Praja Court’ (kangaroo court).
