Bhubaneswar: On Thursday, Odisha reported its first Omicron related fatality at Bolangir. A woman, who had tested positive for COVID-19 and subsequently for the virus’ new variant Omicron, succumbed today. The deceased, a 45-year-old woman from Agalpur block of Bolangir district was admitted to the Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir on December 20, for treatment after suffering a stroke.
After undergoing treatment at the hospital for two days, she was referred to VIMSAR, Burla, Bolangir CDMO Snehalata Sahu informed. Her swab samples were collected and sent for examination. On December 21, her samples tested positive for COVID, and a few days later, it was confirmed that she was infected with Omicron, following a genome sequencing process, she added.
The district authorities stated it is yet to be confirmed if she died of a heart attack or due to the Omicron infection. Health teams have been rushed to the woman’s house for contact tracing and other necessary action. Swab samples of her family members will also be collected and tested, the authorities informed.
