Paradip: Over a hundred villagers including women protesting against the proposed JSW project at Dhinkia village under Erasama block in Jagatsinghpur district were injured today when police resorted to lathicharge to disperse them.
Police resorted to lathicharge after a face-off between the villagers of Dhinkia and police for about two hours.
The scuffle between Dhinkia villagers and the police took place when the latter tried to stop them at the entry point to their village from taking out a rally against the JSW project.
The police barged into Dhinkia village and charged the protestors with batons sparing none, not even women and children forcing them to run helter-skelter.
As many as 12 platoons of policemen have been deployed in the area.
Since no government ambulances are reaching the place a private ambulance provided by Congress leader Bapi Sarkhel is helping the injured reach hospital.
Tension prevails in the area while policemen are is patrolling.
If sources are to be believed, the police plan to conduct a flag march and set up a camp in Dhinkia village.
