Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the Republic Day, security forces have seized an ammunition dump and other articles suspected to be belonging to Maoists from Chitrakonda block in Swabhiman Anchal of Malkangiri district.
Personnel from the 9th Battalion of the BSF stationed at Ghanabeda and the Malkangiri district police during joint raids today in the forested area near Sadaram, Totaguda and Sanyasiguda villages adjacent to the Andhra-Odisha border seized seven landmines and other Maoist articles hidden and buried in pits atop the hills, reports said.
Each landmine has been found to be weighing in the range of one kilo to five kilos.
According to reports, acting on intelligence inputs, BSF and police personnel first cordoned off the area.
Later a bomb disposal squad of the BSF reached the spot and defused the explosives.
Sources in the security forces said that the Maoists had planned to use the explosives against security forces and disrupt Republic Day celebrations.
However, due to the swift action of the security forces, a major carnage could be avoided.
