Bhubaneswar: While a full-blown Russian invasion of Ukraine is a reality now, students from India who are pursuing MBBS in the former Soviet bloc countries are in a state of agony. The mental state of their parents and families back in India is appalling beyond words.
Coming to Odisha, a rough estimate suggests there are around 300 students from the State who are studying medical courses in Ukraine, who are willing to return home, but stuck as air routes are shut.
OMMCOM NEWS spoke to a family from Cuttack which has sought help from the Indian Government to initiate emergent measures to bring the students back. Aryaman Abhishek has been in Ukraine from the past six years. While situations were tense on frequent occasions, the scenario was never like what it is today, said Aryaman’s mother Aruna Jyoti Biswal.
“I spoke to my son on Wednesday night and he was not feeling good about the recent developments. Though he did not express his concern before me, I could sense his discomfort and urge to be back home,” Biswal said, sobbing. Aryaman’s mother and many other parents from across Odisha have made fervent appeals to the Central Government to undertake immediate evacuation measures and bring their near and dear ones back home.
Similarly, there are around 15 students from Dhenkanal who are studying and stuck in Ukraine. Be it the case of Supreet Swain’s family or Ashadipta Mohapatra’s, the members of the households are terrified. Both Supreet and Ashadipta are in Vinnytsia, a city located in west-Central region of Ukraine.
“From what we see on TV and the Internet, the situation is not likely to get any better in the near future. We are very scared and spend sleepless nights thinking about the safety of our children. We have requested the Government and hope to see our children at home soon,” an elderly couple from Bhubaneswar, whose son is studying in Ukraine said, requesting anonymity.
