Bhubaneswar: In the wake of attacks on Ukraine launched by Russia on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security today evening.
Briefing the media after the high-level emergency meeting, Foreign Secretary Harsh V Shringla said that the Indian PM is very likely to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
PM Modi has stated that the topmost priority of the government is the safety and security of Indian nationals including students in Ukraine, said Shringla.
“A number of steps have been taken to deal with the emerging situation in Ukraine. We started the registration of Indian nationals in Ukraine about a month ago. Based on online registration, we found that 20,000 Indian nationals were there in the country,” Shringla added.
“This government has been very focused when it comes to welfare of Indians in foreign countries. While the situation is an evolving one the Indian embassy in Ukraine is very much functional.”
According to the Foreign Secretary,
approximately 4000 of 20000 Indian nationals have been evacuated.
Students were reluctant to leave earlier because universities had said classes to be offline. “We’ve now persuaded universities to go online,” he said.
