Bhubaneswar: Odisha-Born Indian Ambassador to Ukraine, Partha Satpathy, is keen on evacuating Indian citizens trapped in between the war declared by Russia on Ukraine.
Under his supervision, the Embassy of India in Kyiv has been able to accommodate hundreds of stranded students in Kyiv and also take measures for the safety of other Indian citizens stranded across the country.
After the cancellation of flights and imposition of ‘martial law’ in Ukraine on Thursday, Satpathy took thoughtful steps to let the authorities know about the situation and pave the way for negotiations.
Hours after the Russian invasion on Thursday, Satpathy released a video message stating, “I would like to assure all of you that the Embassy of India continues to operate round the clock looking out for the safety and security of all Indians here.”
He said the Embassy in Kyiv is working out modalities on how to evacuate Indian citizens from the country through the neighboring nations along the western borders of Ukraine.
Asserting that the Embassy will continue to operate till every Indian is bac, he advised everyone to stay calm.
Satpathy, who had completed his schooling in Bhubaneswar is a graduate in Physics from Delhi University with a Masters in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad followed by a Masters in Human Rights and International Law from the Human Rights Centre in Essex, UK.
He had joined the Indian Foreign Service in August 1990. Before joining as Ambassador of the Republic of India to Ukraine, Ambassador Satpathy served as Head of Division (Latin America & Caribbean Division) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Prior to that he also headed the States Division, coordinating federal matters, in MEA from January 2016 to March 2018.
Satpathy has also served as Ambassador of India to the Republic of Senegal with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Cape Verde, Republic of Guinea Bissau and High Commissioner of India to the Republic of The Gambia from 2012-2015. He has served in the Indian Embassies in Moscow, Vienna, Brasilia and Lisbon and worked in the UN and Latin America Divisions of the Ministry of External Affairs.
He has served as Minister in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations Offices in Geneva coordinating multilateral diplomacy issues in the areas of Globalization, Health, International labour issues, climate change, migration issues, hazardous waste management, environmental and conservation diplomacy issues. In this connection, he coordinated matters with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), International Labour Organization (ILO), International Organization for Migration (IOM), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), World Health Organization (WHO), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
Satpathy’s interests are in the areas of Business and Human Rights, Corporate Social Responsibilities, Multilateral Diplomacy, Strategic Dynamics in the BRICS & IBSA regions and Intellectual Property rights. He enjoys outdoor sports activities including golf and cricket.
