Bhubaneswar: Several persons were injured after clashes broke out between the supporters of winning and losing candidates in the recently-concluded panchayat polls in Odisha.
In Mangalpur Panchayat of Jajpur district, four persons including Pradip Mahapatra, the husband of the losing Sarpanch candidate Pankajini Mahapatra, were critically injured after being attacked by supporters of the winning candidate.
All the injured persons were first rushed to Mangalpur Community Health Centre and later to Jajpur district headquarters hospital. From there, one Surendra Jena was shifted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack as his condition worsened.
A complaint in this regard has been registered with the police. Two persons have been detained for interrogation.
Similarly at Pitatali village under Golanthara police limits of Ganjam district, the winning Sarpanch and supporters were taking out a procession when a clash broke out between them and supporters of an opposition.
The situation gradually escalated and it held to the hurling of bombs. Over five persons were injured in the clash. On getting information, police reached the spot and admitted the injured persons to Chikiti Primary Health Centre (PHC).
Some of the injured persons have been identified as P Deba, S Kura, K Papaya, and K Nakeya. Meanwhile, police have initiated a probe into the matter.
