Koraput: Jeypore police on Sunday rescued a newborn who was in the custody of the mother, a mentally challenged woman.
The local IIC had received information about a mentally challenged woman roaming in Jeypore town over the past few days and today morning she came to know that the woman delivered a child.
The IIC rushed with two police officials to the spot and noted that the woman was fighting with the cops. The infant was placed dangerously in her arms, the IIC said.
Soon, a team from the CWC arrived at the spot and managed to rescue the child. While the police made repeated attempts to rehabilitate the retarded woman, they were unsuccessful, and she fled from the area.
The child has been shifted to the paediatric ward of Koraput district headquarters hospital and the medical condition of the baby girl is stated to be fine, the police said.
