New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Southwest Monsoon forecast would be released on Thursday, it was announced on Wednesday.
Deemed as the real ‘Finance Minister’ of the country, monsoon’s arrival is awaited not just by the farming community but scores of other stakeholders, including the stock markets. An agrarian economy, India has a large parts of its agriculture still rainfall dependent and in the times of changing climate, monsoon forecast is treated on par with annual budget.
The IMD issues Long Range Forecast (LRF) for the Southwest Monsoon rainfall over the country in two stages; in April and in June. “In the first stage, forecast for monsoon season (June-September) rainfall for the country as a whole is issued,” said a scientist from IMD.
The presentation on the Long Range Forecast for Southwest Monsoon 2022 would be made by Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, IMD. Secretary, Earth Sciences, M. Ravichandran would be present on the occasion too.
