Bhubaneswar: The final rites of noted playwright and commentator Padma Shri Rajat Kumar Kar were held with full State honours at Swargadwar in Puri on Monday.
Kar passed away during treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Sunday following a cardiac arrest. He was 88.
A native of Mahanga in Cuttack district, Kar had been doing commentary of Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra since 1959. He received a number of prestigious awards for his contribution to the field of literature and education.
He had been awarded Padma Shri in 2021 for his contribution to the revival of the dying art of Pala, in the literature and education fields.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had yesterday said that Kar enriched Odia language and literature in manifold ways. He had immense knowledge on ‘Bhanja’ literature and his contribution to the promotion of Jagannath culture remains memorable.
