Jajpur: Additional District & Sessions Judge Court here on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment after convicting him for committing human sacrifice.
The ADJ court convicted one Deepak Barik alias Gangua of Rajendrapur village under Kuakhia police limits for murdering a minor boy Abhisek Nayak of the same village in 2015. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 on Deepak.
The court sentenced Deepak on the basis of statements given by 24 witnesses.
Briefing reporters after the pronouncement of the sentence, Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) ADJ Court Rajendra Prasad Nayak said that the Court has sentenced Deepak Barik of Rajendrapur village under Kuakhia police limits to life imprisonment. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 on him, the court examined 24 witnesses before awarding the sentence, Nayak added.
The APP said that Deepak was practising sorcery and had earlier told villagers that he needed to sacrifice a human being to become very successful.
It was on February 26, 2015, a feast was underway at Rajendrapur village and people had seen both Deepak and the deceased Abhisek Nayak who was studying in class III attend the feast, the APP stated.
Both Deepak and Abhisek went missing from the feast and remained untraceable despite frantic searching by Abhisek’s parents and fellow villagers, he added.
“On the next day, villagers saw Abhisek’s body floating in a pond near the Maa Mangala temple of the village. They fished out the body and found that the body had a garland of flowers and a vermillion mark on the forehead. Police seized various articles used in sorcery from Deepak’s house and he was arrested,” the APP said.
