Bhubaneswar: National Democratic Alliance’s presidential candidate, former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu, filed her nomination papers on Friday. She was accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top NDA leaders.
Murmu filed her papers in the chamber of the Rajya Sabha Secretary General and the Returning Officer in the Parliament House complex.
A presidential candidate requires a set of 50 proposers and 50 seconders for his or her nomination. Other than the NDA leaders, Murmu was backed by leaders of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the YSRCP, who are not part of the NDA.
Two Cabinet Ministers of Odisha, Jagannath Saraka and Tukuni Sahu, and 10 BJP MLAs from the State were present at the time of her filing the nomination.
The last date for nomination for the post of President is June 29. The poll will be held on July 18 and the counting of votes will take place on July 21. Yashwant Sinha is the candidate of the opposition parties.
