Bhubaneswar: When the debate on climate change and environmental sustainability is on rise, people are finding ways out for responsible production and consumption. One such innovative initiative was taken by the Green Queen of Odisha, Priyadarsini Das in organising a training programme for women artisans of Urnati Jute Cluster at Gop, Konark in Puri district.
Partnering with InkSand, the SFURTI Jute Cluster of MSME Department through the Urnati Trust, the Priyadarsini organised a Jute-based Eco-friendly Jewelery training programme for 20 women artisans of the Urnati Jute Cluster, at Gop.
The women artisans were first sensitised about the issue of climate change and environmental impact caused by the fashion, textiles, and lifestyle accessory industry. And the awareness was created about the rising demand for sustainable fashion, be it apparel or jewellery or accessories for people and home.
The demand for sustainable jewellery is on rise in the world due to rising environmental awareness. The world market for sustainable jewellery is around Rs. 10,000 crores, as informed by experts in the field. Jute being called as the Golden fibre can be used as a base material for creating jewellery and accessories both for the domestic and international market.
The girls have shown keen interest in designing developing jute-based jewellery from Priyadarsini, the noted eco-friendly designer and innovator, said Santosh Swain, the Managing Trustee of the Urnati Trust.
The training will be done in two phases, the 1st phase was about sensitizing the trainees about the market for eco-friendly jewellery in general and possibilities of jute-based eco-friendly jewellery in particular and to introduce the tools, techniques and materials to be used in making jute-based jewellery. The second phase is about design development and skill training in making different types of jute-based eco-friendly jewellery for market, along with quality parameters, finishing, and packaging, said Swain.
