Puri: A stretch of the guard wall of the Puri-Konark Marine Drive has been washed away by a powerful high tide.
The erosion of the guard wall has occurred near the location where the eco-retreat camp was organised by Odisha Tourism causing a threat to national highway number 316 which connects Puri with Konark.
Under the impact of the high tide two electric poles have been also damaged.
Officials of the Puri district administration and national highway authorities have engaged men and machinery in restoration work.
As a temporary restoration measure, wooden poles are being driven into the ground and sandbags are being stacked to prevent further damage.
“Under the impact of the tidal waves around 19 metres of the wall has caved in. Two electric poles have been also damaged under the impact. Since yesterday officials and staff of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) are working to restore it using wooden poles and sandbags,” informed Bhabataran Sahoo, Sub Collector, Puri.
Planning is underway at the higher level for a permanent solution to the issue, Sahoo added.
