Bhubaneswar: A national hockey player who had left the game and her village to work in Tamil Nadu in order to sustain her family has now made a comeback to lead a team in the HAO Senior Women Hockey Championships 2022 that is being held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Sunita Lugun of Ladlada village in Rairakhol block of Sambalpur district is one among five siblings. She had dreamed a future in hockey but lack of opportunities forced her to leave her village and the State to work in Tamil Nadu. She earned a meagre amount of Rs 280 per day, out of which she sent some money to her mother.
As she has played national championships, even without any formal training, her talent was recognised by the authorities of Saheed Madho Singh Hockey Academy in Sambalpur. Sunita was called back and she is now the Captain of the Sambalpur team participating in the HAO Senior Women Hockey Championships 2022.
