Bhubaneswar: A Kandhamal-based poverty-stricken women who survives on alms, today donated Rs 1 lakh to the Jagannath temple in Phulbani. The woman, Tula Behera begs for money to meet her daily needs and used to keep some savings in a postal account.
As her savings accumulated into a substantial amount, the 60-year-old woman decided to donate RS 1 lakh to the Jagannath temple. “I owe my existence and survival to Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe. I am in the last leg of my life. What will I do with the money, so I gave away all to the Almighty,” she said.
The president of Phulbani Jagannath Temple Management Committee, Sunasir Mohapatra, Secretary Harishchandra Maharana and other members received the money from Behera and felicitated her. She was enrolled as a Life Member of the elite committee.
Recognising her noble contribution, the team decided to bear her daily expenses till her death. Behera’s philanthropy amid poverty has become the talk of the town in Phulbani. People from different parts of the state showered praises on the elderly woman for her devotion to Lord Jagannath.
