Bhubaneswar: The Twin City Commissionerate Police today arrested four members of a robbers’ gang in the city.
Acting on reliable information, the Commissionerate Police nabbed the gang while it was wandering on Janpath in between Master Canteen Chowk to Rajmahal Chowk for committing crime.
The arrested gang members have been identified as Suriya Mudaliar (24), Rahul Rao (22), Aditya Kairi (19), and Sankar Swami (22). All the accused are natives of Hoogly district in West Bengal, said an official press release of the Commissionerate Police.
Police seized ₹ 52,000 in cash; stolen vanity bags and purses; 2 stolen mobile phones; 1 stolen laptop with headphone; and stolen documents from the gang’s possession.
The gang specialized in breaking window shields of parked cars and loot belongings like mobile phones, laptops, handbags, purses, and other things kept inside the car.
Elaborating on the modus operandi of the gang, the press release said that normally the gang target parked cars and one of its members breaks the window shield of the car by catapulting iron balls into the window shield while other members steal belongings kept inside the car.
Secondly, the gang members throw currency notes on the road and distract the attention of the target and snatch away their belongings, the press release added.
The gang members normally stay in the Railway Station area in low-cost hotels and lodges. They mostly speak Tamil and Telugu with no definite place of abode and avail autorickshaws for their movement and take maximum precaution to conceal their identity, the press release stated.
The gang members are involved in at least 10 cases under Bhubaneswar Urban Police District and one case in Malgodown police station of Cuttack Urban Police District, the press release further stated.
