Keonjhar: Crushed under the burden of poverty and hunger, a woman belonging to Manoharpur village in Salania panchayat here was seen offering her three-month-old daughter for sale.
The woman identified as Mamata Dash was moving from pillar to post in Bishnupur village in Hatadihi block, in a bid to sell her toddler. This is Mamata’s fourth child from her husband, Santosh who died in a road accident seven months back.
Santosh’s mother was also killed in the same mishap, leaving Mamata all alone to fend for her four children and herself. To make things worse, the widowed woman did not have an Aadhar card or ration card due to which she was unable to get free ration for the family.
According to reports, the woman had handed over her son to a family a few months back and was living with her three daughters. However, when it came to the survival of the children because of poverty, she decided to sell the youngest.
After being informed about Mamata’s ordeal, Anandpur sub-collector promised to provide immediate assistance to the family in distress. The local Childline was rushed to the village to support the mother and her baby on priority.
