Bhubaneswar: Prime accused in the Mamita Meher murder case Gobind Sahu committed suicide today morning. He was lodged in Kantabanji jail in Bolangir district. Sahu attempted the extreme step on the prison premises and was rushed to the doctor who declared him ‘brought dead’.
The incident has raised serious questions on the security apparatus in the Kantabanji jail.
According to reports, Sahu used a towel to hang himself inside the prison cell. However, it remains unclear how he managed to commit the step in a prison. Sources said Sahu was under mental duress after his bail plea was turned down by the Orissa High Court recently.
In October 2021, Sahu allegedly killed Meher, a teacher in his school by strangulating her in a car. Later, he set the body of Meher afire and buried it in a pit within a half-constructed stadium at Mahaling in Golamunda Tehsil in Kalahandi district.
On October 19 (2021), the missing teacher’s body parts were retrieved from the aforementioned stadium. The Bolangir police had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh on Sahu’s head. On the same day, he was arrested from a sugarcane field at Budhipadar village under Bangomunda block in Bolangir district.
