Covid 4th wave

Bhubaneswar:  Even though no specific prediction has been made with regard to India, one study has, however, predicted the likelihood of Covid fourth wave in India towards the 2nd or 3rd week of March, informed Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Special Secretary (Public Health), Health & Family Welfare Department.

“Even if there is a Covid fourth wave in the 2nd or 3rd week of March in India, there can be a slight increase in the number of positive cases since 90 percent of the people have taken two doses of the vaccine. In our state 40 percent of the people have taken precautionary doses, so, therefore, we hope the likelihood an increase of cases won’t be applicable to us,” said Dr Mohanty addressing a Covid advisory session.

In addition to that people have developed herd immunity because of vaccination and multiple infections, Dr Mohanty added.

Explaining the situation in China, Dr Mohanty informed that Covid cases rose after restrictions were lifted on December 8 following public resistance.

Similarly, the Sinovac vaccine of China was not as effective as Covaxin and Covishield vaccines used in India, he added.

He said wearing mask while in crowded public places as advised in the advisory will be beneficial.

“I will appeal to the people not to panic but rather remain alert and adhere to Covid appropriate behaviour,” Dr Mohanty said.
