Bhubaneswar: In a horrific incident, a woman home guard, on her way to the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela for FIH Hockey World Cup duty succumbed to her injuries sustained in a road accident on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Johani Tirkey, a resident of Bandhamunda.
Eyewitnesses said Johani was riding a scooter on her way to the stadium when a truck hit her vehicle from the rear at Hanuman Vatika Chhak here at around 7:00 am. As the victim fell off the scooter, the killer truck ran over Johani, killing her on the spot.
The Uditnagar police seized the truck and detained its driver for interrogation.
Police recovered Johani’s body and sent it to the Rourkela Government Hospital for post-mortem.
