Bhubaneswar: The authorities of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, have rusticated two students from the institute’s IT and Physics department for a year for allegedly thrashing another student in the college hostel. Sources said that the two students along with two accomplices will also have to cough up Rs 25,000 each.
The guilty students have been directed to deposit the fine by January 20.
According to reports, the incident dates back to January 7, when the four students allegedly thrashed another final-year student at the Pulaha Hall of Residence over a trivial issue. In the incident, the victim was critically injured due to the beating and was admitted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSR), Burla.
Subsequently, the victim’s father filed a complaint with the police as well as the university authorities. The institute’s disciplinary committee met on the issue on January 9.
The two rusticated students have been barred from entering the VSSUT premises during the period of their rustication. In case of violation of the order, the rusticated students will be terminated permanently from the university.
After their punishment period, their parents will require submitting undertakings to the university. The students have been directed to submit the pecuniary penalty to the Hostel Development Fund. In case of a default, they cannot continue their semester and their registration will be cancelled.
