Berhampur: The carcass of an elephant carcass was found near Denga Khaman village in the Karda Range of Phulbali Bankhand bordering Kandhamal in Ganjam on Thursday morning. While the cub is said to be three-year-old, the cause of the animal’s death is still unclear.
Local villagers found the elephant calf lying in the forest near Denga Khaman village on Thursday. It is believed that the calf died on Wednesday night. Since the place where the carcass was found is a border area, Bhanjnagar North Forest Range Officer Sudharsan Behera reached the spot and conducted an investigation. Forest staff led by Biranchi Panda, a ranger in Karda, also reached the spot.
Later, Panda informed that the reason for the death of the elephant calf will be known only after the post-mortem report is available. The post-mortem of the calf will be done on Thursday.
Frequent deaths of elephants in the border areas have become a matter of concern for the Forest department, which is already investing the death of an 18-year-old pachyderm in the central forest area.
