Bhubaneswar: Wishing a safe and happy Makar Sankranti, the Odisha Police have urged the citizens to avoid using ‘manza’ (glass-coated) thread for kite flying as several people had their lives due to the killer string across the state.
The Odisha Police also urged the people to be careful while flying kites so as to prevent any untoward incident.
“Use of ‘manza’ thread for kite flying may cause injuries and even deaths to the commuters. Use of such thread will invite punishment to the kite flyers,” said the Odisha Police in a Twitter post on Friday.
In fact, a 31-year-old man was killed after his throat was slit with a ‘manza’ thread on the Cuttack-Chandbali State Highway near Jagatpur in the Cuttack district in December 2021. The incident took place when the victim Jayant Samal was travelling on a motorcycle toward Cuttack.
There are several other incidents when people died in ‘manza’ thread mishaps in different parts of the city during the last few years. Seven years back, a six-year-old girl Swetalina Behera died after her throat was slit by a ‘manza’ thread while returning home along with her parents on a bike on the National Highway-16 near Phulnakhara in Cuttack.
In 2016, a lawyer from Barang locality in Cuttack died after his throat was slit by the ‘manza’ thread in the Purighat area.
In addition, several people sustained varying degrees of injuries after they were entangled in the ‘manza’ thread in Odisha in the past.
