Bhubaneswar: Manda buffalo, a native to Koraput region of Odisha has been officially recognized as the 19th buffalo breed in India.
Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar distributed Animal Breed Registration Certificate of Manda buffalo to Prof Susanta Kumar Dash of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology at a function held today at the National Agricultural Science Center, New Delhi organized by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
Manda buffalo received accession number ‘INDIA_BUFFALO_1500_MANDA_0109. It was registered at the national level in 2021.
Manda buffaloes have ash grey and grey coat with copper colour hairs. These buffaloes which are small sized sturdy animals are used for ploughing and other agricultural purposes by the people in Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts. These animals are resistant to parasitic infection and disease.
