Bhubaneswar: The Jamujhari jail on the outskirts of the city will be transformed into country’s biggest model jail.
The Jharpada Special jail which is presently located inside the city will be shifted to Jamujhari.
Bhubaneswar Model jail, the country’s ultra-modern jail will be constructed on 50 acres of land and its construction will be completed within the next two years.
The Jharpada Special jail is overcrowded. Its expansion is not possible due to lack of space. Currently, there are 1200 prisoners lodged in it. There is also likelihood of security issues. For these reasons there is a need for construction of a new jail.
The project has been approved by the State government and its construction will begin soon, informed DG Prisons Manoj Chhabra.
The new jail at Jamujhari will be green jail with zero carbon emission. Further, it will be a smart jail for housing 2500 prisoners.
The new jail will have a 120 bed hospital, amphitheater, library, open gym, children’s park, bakery unit, food processing unit, special cells and wards for transgender prisoners and with large space for women prisoners.
The construction work of the new jail will be undertaken by the Odisha Police Housing Corporation.
