Rayagada: Police on Monday arrested Gopinath Kisan, a junior engineer in the Kothabadi Road Construction Department in Kashipur block of Odisha’s Rayagada district, for allegedly marrying four women without getting divorced from his previous three wives.
The police arrested Gopinath on the basis of a complaint lodged by his fourth wife Sunita Kisan, who also alleged physical and mental torture for dowry and sexual harassment. He has been booked under Sections 90/498 294/323/307/506/494/34 IPC.
According to reports, Sunita came to Rayagada police station on Monday along with her parents. She lodged a complaint alleging Gopinath married her and three other young women without obtaining a divorce from any of his wives. She also alleged that Gopinath physically assaulted her and threatened to kill her if she could not get more dowry or offer more physical intimacy.
Sunita, a resident of village Pali in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, contacted Gopinath of Ghumusar village in Sambalpur district, via a social media site. They got married at a temple in Jharsuguda in February 2022 as per the wishes of both families.
However, their relationship began to sour when Sunita came to know about Gopinath’s previous marriages. He allegedly tortured her for asking him to divorce his previous wives officially. When matters became worse, she lodged a complaint with the Rayagada police in June 2022. The couple united after police counselling but Gopinath returned to his old ways soon.
