Bhubaneswar: With the improvement of the law and order situation in Sambalpur 10 days after the violence during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations on April 12 and 14, internet services resumed in Sambalpur town on Sunday.
The restrictions were imposed on April 13 to curb the circulation of inflammatory messages and prevent misuse of social media. However, internet connectivity on broadband and leased line were restored on Friday, and internet services for mobile phone users were suspended.
A toll-free number was also issued for the public to report the circulation of inappropriate messages or posts carrying hate speech or false news.
Meanwhile, the curfew has been further relaxed in Sambalpur for 15 hours from 5.00 am to 8.00 pm.
It is worth mentioning here that violence hit Sambalpur town during a motorcycle rally on April 12 ahead of Hanuman Jayanti. While the rally was passing through Motijharan Square, some persons pelted stones at the participants of the rally.
The incident subsequently led to clashes between the two groups. Many shops and vehicles were set on fire during the clash.
Eid was also a low-key affair in Sambalpur town on Saturday as the Muslim community offered prayers at different mosques instead of congregating at the Sakhipars Eidgah for mass prayers owing to the restrictions imposed by the district administration.
