Possible Cyclone In The Bay Of Bengal, SRC Alerts Collectors

Bhubaneswar: On the basis a forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) about a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal on May 6, the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) on Wednesday asked all Collectors to keep a watch on the situation and be on alert.

A letter issued to the Collectors of all districts stated: “As per the Midday Weather Bulletin by the IMD on May 3, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6.”

Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 7. It is likely to concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal on May 8.”

“Thereafter, there is a good possibility of its intensification while moving nearly towards the central Bay of Bengal,” it added.

Meanwhile, there is a Norwester alert over Odisha during the next two days for which the district likely to be affected are have been tagged with a yellow warning by the IMD.

These are: Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Sundergarh, Angul, Sambalpur, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Nuapada.

The District Collectors have been asked to keep administrative machinery ready to face any eventuality. People need to be asked to keep a watch on the weather and take shelter during thunderstorm activity to protect themselves from lightning and follow traffic advisories in urban areas.

“Submit a report on damage, if occurred due to thunderstorm, whirlwind, hailstorm, lightning, immediately for Government’s information,” the letter further stated.
