Bhubaneswar: Mancheswar police have arrested a youth from Saptasati Vihar in Palasuni area on Wednesday for allegedly duping Rs 13 lakh from three youths by promising to provide them with jobs in the Police department.
The accused has been identified as Debabrata Palei, a resident of Saptasati Vihar in Palasuni area under Mancheswar police limits.
Palei was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by one Balaram Pradhan who alleged to have been duped of his money by the former who promised to get him a job in the Police department.
Police have seized a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a motorcycle from Palei’s possession. He has been forwarded to court, police said.
According to a press release issued by the police, Palei during interrogation has confessed to his crime and told the police that he has been cheating people to lead a luxurious life.
Palei was operating a firm in the name and style of D2-S Solutions in Saptasati Vihar, Palasuni under Mancheswar police station limits.
Apart from promotion and publicity on social media platforms, Palei was reportedly promising to provide jobs in various departments of the government.
On being contacted by one of Pradhan’s friends Mritunjay, accused Palei promised to provide a job in Odisha Police.
On being called by Palei, Pradhan along with his parents came to meet the former at his office on March 17 this year. Palei asked for Rs 20 lakh to fetch the job in the police department.
A few days later, Palei again called Pradhan to his office and asked him to get two job seekers.
On March 27, Pradhan with two of his friends visited Palei’s office and paid him Rs 2 lakh. Likewise, Palei took a total of Rs 13 lakh from Pradhan and his two friends Basanta and Manas by cash and money transfer through the Phone Pe app with a promise to provide them with jobs in Odisha Police.
On April 5, the results of recruitment in the Odisha Police were published, Pradhan and two of his friends on not finding their names in the list contacted Palei. To ensure that they get the jobs, Palei again asked for Rs 50,000.
Pradhan and his friends sensed that they have been duped and then lodged a written complaint at the Mancheswar police station.
Mancheswar Police on Wednesday following an investigation into the matter arrested Palei. During his interrogation by the police, Palei confessed to his crime and told that he had been duping people to lead a luxurious lifestyle.
Police seized an SUV and a motorcycle from his possession which he confessed to having purchased with the money obtained through duping people.
