Bhubaneswar: The regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here on Friday forecasted that several Odisha districts are likely to experience Nor’wester today. At the same time, the weather office said that the heat wave prevailing across the state will continue for another four days.
Nor’wester rain lashed several places in Odisha, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Athagarh, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Dhenkanal, on Thursday. Consequently, Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Nikunja Bihari Dhal has sought reports from District Collectors on the damages caused by the Nor’wester in different regions of the state.
People, however, got some relief from the heatwave as rain accompanied by strong lighting and gusty wind at 40-50 km per hour on Thursday.
Several houses were damaged while trees were uprooted in various areas of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Gale and rain also destroyed several kutcha and asbestos houses in Athagarh, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, and Dhenkanal. The power supply was also affected in many places as electric poles were uprooted by the strong wind.
Taking serious note of the incidents, the SRC directed the concerned Collectors to furnish a report on damages due to the Nor’wester. He also directed the officials to liaise with DISCOMS for immediate restoration of power.
