Bhubaneswar: The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) Bhubaneswar, observed World Environment Day 2023 at its main campus auditorium with two lectures focusing on good health and awareness of plastic waste in our environment.
The two eminent speakers, Dr Megha, Associate Professor, University of Trans-Disciplinary Health Sciences and Technology, Bengaluru, spoke on the environmental impact of the food we consume on daily basis.
She explained the resources needed to produce the food we consume and how we can change our behavior to get the same nutrition with minimal effect to the environment.
She also emphasized the importance of consuming nutritious, locally produced food that is not highly processed and explained the importance of the sustainability of resources.
She explained the importance of our traditional knowledge on food system from Ayurveda.
Prof Ch. Suryakanta Mishra, Former Director, Basic Sciences, OUAT spoke on plastic pollution in general and with a focus on microplastic pollution.
He explained the impact of microplastic on food chain and the adverse effects it has on living organisms. His talk on ‘Reduce and Recycle’ of plastic was well-taken. The interactive sessions were attended by ILS faculties, staff, students working at ILS, and invited school students.
The event was coordinated by the Senior Scientist of ILS, Dr Rajeev Swain who told more such seminars and awareness campaigns are being planned to promote “Mission Life – Life style for Environment” initiative of Government of India.
