Puri: An elderly couple reportedly committed suicide unable to repay the loan they had taken from a private finance company. The couple was found hanging in their room on Sunday morning at Rajmisthi of Upasahi village of Allayodi Kanas block of Odisha’s Puri district.
The deceased couple has been identified as Banambar Behera (65) and his wife Banita Behera (53).
According to reports, employees of the finance company arrived at the couple’s residence on Saturday night to collect the loan installment. The employees of the finance company remained at their residence throughout the night and did not leave even after the couple told them that they had no money to repay the loan.
Unable to bear the tension and shame, the couple reportedly took the drastic step of ending their lives by hanging from the ceiling of their room.
When the villagers learned about the incident on Sunday morning, they rushed the couple to Khurda district hospital where the doctors declared them ‘brought dead’. The incident has given rise to anger among the villagers who complain that private finance company representatives have been harassing villagers for not repaying their borrowed amount.
