Bhubaneswar: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) as part of its move to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has informed its affiliated schools that they can now offer the option of Indian languages as a medium of instruction including Odia apart from the existing options of English and Hindi, informed Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Speaking to reporters here today Pradhan said that the CBSE has issued a circular to its affiliated schools on Friday in this connection.

The circular sent to the heads of affiliated schools by CBSE specified that Indian languages mentioned in Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution can be used as the medium of instruction from pre-primary classes till Class XII as an optional medium, in addition to other available options.

As many as 22 Indian languages are listed in Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution.

The incorporation of Indian languages as a medium of instruction is a major step towards promoting multilingualism and preserving India’s linguistic diversity.

By making education accessible in different languages, CBSE aims to enhance students’ learning experience and strengthen their connection to their cultural and linguistic identities.
