Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places in 10 districts of Odisha during next the next four days due to the prevalent monsoon trough and a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal.

The Orange alert has been issued for Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kendrapara, Angul, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Jajpur, and Bhadrak for August 1 and 2. These regions are likely to receive 70 mm to 200 mm of rain during the period.

The IMD regional center here, in its mid-day bulletin, said, “The low-pressure area over north Odisha and adjoining West Bengal Coasts now lies over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts. Associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height.”

The monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bareilly, Patna, and Bankura, the center of a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts and thence southeastwards to east-central Bay of Bengal.

A trough runs from northwest Bihar to the cyclonic circulation associated with the low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between 0.9 and 3.1 Km above mean sea level.

Meanwhile, sporadic rains have occurred by the impact of low-pressure areas formed in the Bay of Bengal in the last few weeks. The state recorded 461.9 mm of rain between June 1 and 29. However, 12 of 30 districts have witnessed less than normal downpours during the period.
