Baripada: A major fire was reported in the Operation Theatre (OT) on the third floor of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) building of the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College & Hospital (PRMMC&H) here at around 2.00 PM today.
All the patients admitted to the ICU and Ward housed on the third floor of the MCH have been evacuated safely. No casualties have been reported so far.
“All of a sudden fire was noticed in one or two rooms on the third floor of the MCH building. It could be due to an electric short circuit. Before it could spread further Fire Brigade was called in and it has been doused. There are no casualties,” said Krushnanand Mohanty, Chairman, Baripada Municipality.
Fire tenders have extinguished the blaze. However, the entire third floor of the MCH building is filled with smoke; efforts are underway to clear the smoke.
While the cause behind the fire is not clear, it is suspected to have been caused by an electric short circuit.
“Security personnel of the hospital were the first to notice the fire. The earthing got burnt and a fire was reported inside the hospital. It is suspected to have been caused by an electric short circuit. The security guards immediately called the Fire Service. Fire has been extinguished. There is no fire now. But the third floor is filled with smoke. All have been shifted. Search is still going on. No burn injuries have been reported as of now,” informed Battula Gangadhar, SP, Mayurbhanj.
