Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the formation of a cyclonic circulation over east-central Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours and it is likely to develop into a low-pressure area in the next 48 hours. It may further intensify into a depression.

Several areas of Odisha are likely to receive heavy rainfall under its influence for the next four days from Friday, the weather office said. As a result, heavy rainfall is expected in several areas across Odisha from tomorrow.

“A cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea off Myanmar coast during next 24 hours. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal off the Myanmar coast during the subsequent 24 hours. Thereafter, it is likely to move northwestwards with the possibility of gradual intensification,” the IMD said.

Meanwhile, the regional center of the IMD here has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in 11 districts of Odisha for today. Thunderstorms with lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore.

The intensity of rainfall is likely to increase from tomorrow. A yellow warning has been issued for 17 districts for tomorrow. Five Odisha districts – Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Nabarangapur, Koraput, and Malkangiri – are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall tomorrow.

According to the IMD, extremely heavy rainfall is expected on September 30 and October 1. Several areas across Odisha are also likely to experience very heavy rainfall on October 1.
