Bhubaneswar: A 50-year-old man died of drowning on Wednesday while trying to rescue a cat that had fallen into an abandoned well near Patia railway station here.
The deceased has been identified as Sibaram Sahu.
According to reports, a man’s pet cat had fallen into a nearly 60-feet-deep abandoned well near Patia railway station here on Wednesday.
The man was trying to rescue his pet by dropping a bucket attached to a rope inside the well.
Deceased Sibaram, who was nearby jumped into the well to rescue the cat. Inside the well, he felt suffocated and drowned. Seeing Sibaram drown another person Sankar Das of Padmakesharipur jumped into the well to rescue him. He too met with the same fate.
Later, a local informed Bhajaman Sahu, the deceased’s elder brother that Sibaram had fallen inside the well.
“I went inside the well with the help of a rope. I felt suffocated and came out of the well. In the meantime, people had informed the Fire Brigade. Fire Services personnel arrived and rescued all but by that time my brother had died,” said Bhajaman Sahu, deceased Sibaram’s elder brother.
The other person Sankar Das rescued by the Fire Service personnel has been admitted to Patia Community Health Centre (CHC).
Bhajaman and Sibaram hail from Ganjam district and eked out a living by selling ice cream.
