Berhampur: In a shocking incident, a woman member of the Child Welfare Committee here was allegedly beaten to death at Nilakantha Nagar under Gosaninuagaon police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Soudamini Rath.
According to reports, Soudamini worked with several NGOs and looked after the welfare of small children. In addition, she was also associated with several social activities, such as working for children affected by AIDS.
Saudamini, who was attending a three-day workshop in Bhubaneswar, returned home on Wednesday evening. While she was speaking to someone on the phone, she was attacked by the unidentified miscreant who first attacked her on the head and later beat her to death on the spot.
Soon after the gruesome incident, Town police SDPO Rajib Lochan Panda and Gosaninuagaon IIC Smruti Prabha Pradhan arrived at the spot, recovered Soudamini’s body and sent it for postmortem. Police have also launched an investigation into the crime.
While the precise reason for the brutal murder is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected to be a fallout of previous enmity. Soudamini’s sister, who resides in Bhubaneswar, said that the Soudamini could also have been killed by unidentified miscreants, who possibly broke into the house for theft knowing that Soudamini was in Bhubaneswar.
Meanwhile, the police have detained the deceased’s driver and are interrogating him.
