Visakhapatnam/Bhubaneswar: The Railway authorities on Monday clarify that 13 people have been killed in the mishap wherein four coaches of the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger train derailed on Sunday after it was rammed into by the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train near Kantakapalli junction in Kothavalasa ‘mandal’ (block).
Earlier, the toll was pegged at 14. The Railway authorities today said that the death toll was revised after counting the severed body parts of a deceased twice. They added that 29 injured passengers are currently under treatment and 10 among them are stated to be critical. In all, 50 passengers of both trains sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured were shifted to hospitals in Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam. Vizianagaram district Collector Nagalakshmi said 32 injured were admitted to the Government General Hospital at Vizianagaram.
Meanwhile, the rescue operations have been completed and now the focus is on clearing the tracks to normalise railway traffic on the route.
