Public Health Facilities In Odisha To Maintain Mosquito-Free Environment

Bhubaneswar: In view of increased incidence of vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue etc, the Health & Family Welfare Department of the Odisha government has directed Directors of Capital Hospital & Rourkela Govt Hospital and all CDM &PHOs to take a slew of measures to maintain a mosquito-free environment in the hospital and inside the hospital premises.

A letter issued by Commissioner-cum-Secretary Health & Family Welfare department Shalini Pandit said that in order to improve patient satisfaction, the need of the hour is to equip the public health facilities as healthy and eco-friendly hospitals.

The letter stated that as per the Kayakalpa mandate under thematic area facility upkeep check point no. A1.5, the following activities may be taken up at public health institutions to ensure a mosquito free hospital campus:

  1. Wire Mesh in windows for all Ama Hospitals, out of Ama Hospital fund.
  2. Procurement of one Fogging machine each for all DHHs and SDHs out of Ama Hospital Fund.
  3. Desert Coolers & other reservoirs used are to be cleaned regularly and oil sprinkling to be done by outsourcing agencies engaged under Nirmal.
  4. Source reduction by eliminating water retention inside the premises, no water stagnation for mosquito breeding within the premises and Bush cutting and other cleanliness activities to be done periodically by outsourcing agencies engaged under Nirmal.
  5. Coordination with Rural and Urban Bodies for mass cleanliness drives in and around the HCFs in frequent intervals.
  6. Installation of fly catchers & Ultrasonic Mosquito repellent etc. as found suitable may be done at DHHs under Ama Hospital fund.

The Commissioner-cum-Secretary has directed the aforementioned officials to undertake the above activities as part of Kayakalpa/ Ama Hospital Initiatives so as to ensure that the public health facilities are equipped with a mosquito-free environment.
