Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday night arrested the man accused of allegedly raping and killing a four-year-old girl in Kela Sahi slum in Sunapada area under Airfield police limits in Bhubaneswar on Monday evening.
The accused has been identified as Ghania, a daily wage earner and neighbour of the victim in the Kela Sahi slum. According to police, Ghania is an addict of alcohol and was released from a rehabilitation center a few days ago.
Addressing the media, Twin City Commissionerate Police chief Soumendra Priyadarshi on Wednesday said, “Soon after the crime was registered by the Airfield police on Monday night, we formed six teams to track down the accused. After searching several places, police arrested Ghania from near the Rahama railway station area on Tuesday evening.”
“The accused is a neighbour of the victim and had entered the latter’s house when her parents had gone to work. He went to the girl on the pretext of giving her candies but then assaulted her sexually. When the girl raised a cry for help, he slit her throat and fled the area fearing police action,” the Commissioner of Twin City police said.
According to Priyadarshi, the post-mortem report of the deceased revealed that the girl was not raped, but an attempt was definitely made. “We doubt that the accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.”
“Several cases, including one under the POCSO Act, have been registered against Ghania and we are working to frame a harsh chargesheet against him. We will appoint a special public prosecutor to facilitate the trial and demand exemplary action against the accused,” Priyadarshi added.
