Bhubaneswar: A woman was crushed to death, while her husband sustained critical injuries when a drunk driver hit them in the parking lot of the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar on Sunday night. The accident occurred when the driver, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, tried to reverse the vehicle and, in the process, hit the couple.
While the woman, who had come from Digapahandi in Ganjam to offer puja at the temple, died on the spot, the man was admitted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar in a critical condition.
According to reports, locals first rushed the couple to Capital Hospital, where the doctors declared the woman ‘brought dead’. As the condition of the man deteriorated, he was later shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.
The Lingaraj police have seized the car and arrested the accused driver. While the identity of the victims could not be ascertained, Lingaraj Police have contacted their counterpart in Digapahandi for details about the couple.
Meanwhile, it has been found that the car is registered in the name of one Gautam Ray, a resident of the Old Town area of Bhubaneswar. The IIC of Lingaraj police station informed that the owner of the vehicle would soon be called to the police station for interrogation.
