Sambalpur: A notorious criminal Jacob on Saturday sustained a bullet injury on his leg in an encounter with the police near Kenghati in Sambalpur.
Jacob has been admitted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla in a critical condition.He was involved in robbery from a liquor shop.
Police have arrested 11 other accused along with Jacob, informed Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo, SP, Sambalpur.
According to police sources, on late on Friday night a robbery had taken place at a liquor shop in Sadar police station limits of Sambalpur. As many as 10-12 robbers were involved in the robbery. Following a complaint, police had registered a case and was investigating it. Today while the robbers were planning to commit a robbery near Kenghati, police raided the place. The robbers fired at the police following which the police retaliated. Jacob was hit on his leg in the crossfire.
Police have seized Rs 3.20 lakh in cash, two firearms, two daggers, four knives and two iron rods from the possession of the robbers.
Jacob has more 10 cases against his name in different police stations of Koraput district. The criminal antecedents of the accused are being examined by the police.
According to Bhamoo, while 10 of the arrestees are from Koraput and Rayagada, the other two are from the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh.
