Bhubaneswar: World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, is an annual United Nations observance focusing on the importance of freshwater.
This year’s theme is ‘Leveraging Water for Peace’ which emphasizes the important role of water in the world’s stability and prosperity.
As the effects of climate change increase and the world population continues to grow, the protection and conservation of our most precious ‘water resource’ has become increasingly important. Through concerted efforts to balance the human rights and needs of all, water can be a sustainable force and a catalyst for sustainable development.
On the occasion of World Water Day and in view of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Water Resources Department in the forenoon today held a discussion on the Department’s contribution to the increasing need for water and its efficient use.
The session chaired by Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary, Water Resources Department Anu Garg was attended by senior officers of the department.
Various important steps taken by the department for proper and equitable distribution of water among different water users were discussed during the session. Promotion of water conservation-reuse culture, diversification of crops to produce multiple crops per year from the same land, application of technologies for efficient water use, equitable and judicious water management, women’s responsibility in it and leadership and amicable resolution of water distribution disputes were discussed in the meeting.
