Do’s and Don’ts of Holi

Bhubaneswar: As we are gearing up for the vibrant festival of colours, everyone needs to make sure to have a safe and enjoyable Holi celebration. Colours available in the market can be incredibly toxic for our skin, especially the eyes. So, we have to be extra careful while celebrating the festival of colours. Let’s embrace the spirit of Holi responsibly and spread love and happiness all around.

Here are some essential do’s and don’ts to keep in mind for the Holi celebration. Following these do’s and don’ts will ensure that you have a lively and secure celebration:

Do’s for a safe Holi

Use Natural Colours: It is advisable to use eco-friendly, natural colours made from flowers or herbal extracts. Such colors are gentle on the skin and will not harm the environment.

Protect Your Skin: Apply moisturizer or coconut oil on your skin before going out to play. Use oil on your hair before playing Holi because oil acts as a protective barrier and makes it easier for you to wash off colours later.

Wear Comfortable Clothes: Choose clothes that are old as well as comfortable so that you don’t mind getting stained with colours. Light-coloured cotton clothes are preferably ideal for Holi celebrations because they are easy to wash.

Stay Hydrated: Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water before, during and after playing Holi. Water will help you to avoid dehydration, especially if you’re playing under the sun for an extended period.

Respect Boundaries: One of the major things to do for a safe Holi is to respect people’s boundaries and only apply colours to those who are interested in playing Holi. Avoid forcing colours on anyone who chooses not to play Holi.

Be Mindful of Allergies: If someone requests you not to smear with colours due to health reasons, it is important to respect their wishes.

Celebrate Responsibly: Don’t indulge in excessive alcohol consumption or rowdy behaviour with others. It is important to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone around you.

Don’ts for Safe Holi

Don’t be aggressive while playing Holi: Play Holi in the spirit of joy and love. Avoid being aggressive towards others while applying colours which could lead to accidents or injuries.

Avoid Harmful Chemical Colours: Don’t use colours that contain harmful chemicals such as lead, mercury, and acids. These can cause unwanted skin irritation, allergies, or even more severe health issues.

Don’t Compromise Safety: One of the don’ts for safe Holi is to choose a safe and open space for playing Holi. This will minimize the risk of accidents. Children should avoid playing on busy roads or near traffic.

Use Water Responsibly: Conserve water during Holi celebrations. Do not unnecessarily wastewater, and use it responsibly.

Don’t Force Participation: Respect everyone’s choices. Do not pressure anyone into participating in Holi celebrations if they’re uninterested.

Avoid Inappropriate Behavior: It is seen that after consuming alcohol or bhaang, people behave differently with others. Hence, refrain from any behaviour that may be perceived as disrespectful or inappropriate towards anyone.

Don’t Forget Sun Protection: Shield yourself from the harsh sun by wearing sunglasses, hats, or scarves. Apply sunscreen if you are playing under direct sun and protect your skin from sunburn during outdoor Holi celebrations.

We will have a happy Holi celebration by following these dos and don’ts.  Let’s make this Holi enjoyable for everyone around us.
