Bhubaneswar: The Department of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement of AMRI Hospital in Bhubaneswar celebrated the first anniversary of robotics-assisted knee surgery as the premier health centre under the leadership of renowned Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sunil Kumar Dash has completed 300 plus successful surgeries within a year.
The Orthopaedic department of AMRI Hospital headed by Dr Dash had started robotics-assisted surgery in February 2023 with fourth-generation image-free robotic system (Velys). Till now, it completed more than 300 knee replacements i.e Robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (RATKA).
The most important aspect of the surgical procedure is that the more unsolved knee issues are being solved with the help of AI. Patients with fractured bones along with severe arthritis, bone deformities and bone loss where the surgeons could not do with conventional surgeries, now easily avail the modern facility in the city without going outside for treatment.
Dr Sunil Dash, the Director of Joint Replacement Surgery at AMRI Hospital, is the pioneer of the advanced knee operation.
Dash, a product of SCB Medical College, Cuttack, had received the International Fellowship 2010 from Asklepios Germany under professor Heiko Griachen. He has been treating the elderly and end-stage arthritis patients, especially with knee and hip-related issues.
He started operating joints in 2007 and has crossed already 100.000 joints!
Dash said that the most common misconception about the surgery is that the surgery is not done by the surgeon. The procedure is assisted by a robotic arm and the surgeon is in control of the entire procedure. The robotics arm’s job is to help the surgeon to perform the knee replacement surgery. The robot provides real-time data of the bones and soft tissues (muscles and ligaments) surrounding the joint to do a virtual surgery before the actual knee surgery on table.
