Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court at Bhawanipatna sentenced a former Sarpanch to one year of rigorous imprisonment (RI) after convicting her in a bribery case.
According to an official press release, Phulmati Majhi, former Sarpanch of Odri Gram Panchayat, under Thuamul Rampur Block, was chargesheeted by Odisha Vigilance in a case for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 15,000 from a complainant to issue engagement order for the post of Supply Assistant (Jogana Sahayaka) in his favour at Thuamul Rampur Block, was convicted by Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhawanipatna on Saturday.
She has been sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 1 year and a fine of Rs 2,000.
In default of payment of the fine, the former Sarpanch will undergo further RI for 2 months more for the offence under section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988.
The Court further sentenced her to undergo RI for 6 months and a fine of Rs1,000 and in default of payment of fine, to undergo further RI for 1 month more for the offence under section 7 PC Act,1988. Both the sentences are to run concurrently.
