Bhubaneswar: A five-year-old girl died after drowning in a river at Jari village under Binjharpur police limits in Jajpur district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Soni.
According to sources, Soni’s mother was taking a bath in the river leaving her daughter at the riverbank to play. Soni was swept away after entering into the river. Soni’s mother cried for help seeing her daughter being swept away in the river.
Locals and boatmen present there came to the rescue of Soni after listening to her mother’s scream. After searching for some time, they rescued Soni in an unconscious condition and rushed her to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The incident has sent shockwaves in the locality.
